Prepare to Witness

By Mary Hathaway of Washington, D.C., USA

“And when you do not cry to the Lord, let your hearts be full, drawn out in prayer to him continually for your welfare, and also for the welfare of those who are around you.”  Alma 16:222

The night shift at the hospital was quiet, so we nurse’s aides had ample time for conversation while we sat at our station. Sometimes talk shifted to church. Joanne belonged to one denomination, and I was seeking spiritual instruction in another faith community. My questions about Joanne’s faith were many, and she always had answers. She told me how her church held continuing revelation as a belief.

Though I continued to go to my church for a while, I soon started going to church with Joanne. I was seeking a more-personal relationship with God. I felt I could find it in Joanne’s faith community. As I learned more about the sacred story, recorded in scripture and in the life of the church, I made my choice.

The decision to join Community of Christ became the most-significant decision of my life, a decision I have never regretted.

As the decades passed, I often think with gratitude of my friend and co-worker. At an early age she was well prepared for the questions of a seeker. I hope I am as well prepared as Joanne so I, too, can invite others to Christ.

Prayer for Peace:

Revealing God, may we always be your disciples, ready to share our witness. May we share our stories, songs, and prayers. As we gain strength in our identity, may we gain a strong foothold on the path to peace.

Spiritual Practice for the Week: Offering Blessings of Community

Each day this week receive and share blessings of community. Begin with a prayer of gratitude for the network of relationships in your life. See and feel connections with family members, spiritual friends, people in your congregation and community, people and creatures in God’s sacred web of life.

What blessings flow to you from these circles? Reflect, pray, and write in your journal about the call to be “Community of Christ.” Go deeper each day as you “discern and embrace” the “divine blessing” of this name that opens you to “become a blessing to the whole creation” (Doctrine and Covenants 163:1). What act of blessing are you invited to complete?

Peace Covenant:

Today, God, I will prepare myself to answer the questions of those who are drawn to the community. I will seek them out and share the peace of Christ.
