Cast Your Nets

By Lynn Brady of Brainerd, Illinois, USA

And the king will answer them, “Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me.”  Matthew 25:40

The Brainerd Congregation in Chicago decided to involve itself in the surrounding neighborhood. We recently began an after-school tutoring program.

Our goal is to cast our nets and help connect the children and families of three grammar schools and one high school within five miles of our congregation.

Our tutoring program meets two days a week.

Volunteers include retired educators, high-school students, young adults, service professionals, neighbors, and church members. Students receive help with homework and added studies in specific areas.

High-school students who volunteer receive community-service learning hours, needed for their graduation.

We are excited about providing this outreach ministry that directly supports families and shows our investment in the education of the children in our community. Your generous contributions to World Mission Tithes provide full-time field ministers who help envision ministry such as Brainerd’s program.

Thank you for giving generously.

Prayer for Peace:

God of our deep inner soul that we struggle so hard to find, God of our outward reach that is our calling, stay with us on our journey. Inspire us to service. Bridge us to community so we may share the peace of Jesus Christ.

Spiritual Practice:

Community of Christ is called to ministries of peace, reconciliation, and healing of the spirit. PeacePathways is a website that shares peace and justice ministries, resources, and opportunities.

Visit http://www.peace-pathways.org and prayerfully discern one ministry that speaks to you or captures your attention. Offer a prayer of blessing on the peace organization you select. Listen quietly to see if God is calling you to additional responses to this ministry or another ministry of peace, reconciliation, or healing. If you cannot visit the website, offer a prayer of blessing on all peace ministries.

Peace Covenant:

With love as my purpose, God, I will find the “least of these” and serve them as I would serve you.
