Into the Future

By Sandra Ferguson of Independence, Missouri, USA

…You received without payment; give without payment.  Matthew 10:8

During the final morning of the 2010 International Leaders Meeting, President Stephen M. Veazey spoke about the future of the church. A young man had written to him about his struggles over the years, resulting in several attempts to commit suicide.

Through contact with a church member the young man received a copy of Doctrine and Covenants 164. Deeply touched by what he read, he described it as “simple, pure, revealed truth (that) washed my soul in hope and life.”

The letter so moved President Veazey that he and his wife, Cathi, decided to increase their contributions to World Mission Tithes so all may experience the hope of the gospel.

He then invited those in the assembly to increase their contributions to World Mission Tithes, as well.

The next week, the Presiding Bishopric received this note from Human Resource Director Steve Graffeo: “Requests from the international field for automatic monthly salary deductions for World Mission Tithes continue. Moved during the morning session last week, several came into the office personally with their requests. Requests continued as they traveled home.”

Contributions to World Mission Tithes—from all members and friends of the church—are critical in sharing the hope of the gospel and saving lives physically, relationally, and spiritually. Thank you for responding by giving generously.

Prayer for Peace:

Creator God, you have blessed us so generously. May we respond by being generous so physical and spiritual needs of others are met. May we share the hope and peace of Jesus Christ.

Spiritual Practice:

Gather a small mound of stones. Meditate on the stones as symbols of differences and destructive acts that continue to separate and wound the human family. Name and anoint each “stone wound” with a drop of water or scented oil. Offer them to God in a prayer for healing and reconciliation.

Peace Covenant:

Today, God, I will try to be aware of those in emotional stress. I will share the hope of Christ with them.
