Sacredness of Creation

By Dorene Kilburn of Stratford, Ontario, Canada

For as the earth brings forth its shoots, and as a garden causes what is sown in it to spring up, so the Lord God will cause righteousness and praise to spring up before all the nations.  Isaiah 61:11

Sometimes in the middle of winter, it’s good to remember the new life of spring. When we look at the harmony and adaptation in the plant and animal world, we marvel at God’s creation.

At a meeting of our local Field Naturalists Club, the guest speaker was a photographer and expert on butterflies and moths. He had a marvelous collection of photos and fascinating information.

One photo appeared to be only the trunk of a big tree, but he showed a moth was clinging to the bark. The moth was a mottled gray, blending perfectly with the tree trunk. Who but God could have created such stunning camouflage!

The speaker led us through a wonderful display of what is all around us in nature. We were overjoyed to hear his witness in statements like, “I see evidence in all the Earth of a Creator,” and “My soul is…rejuvenated by close encounter with nature, and I often sense the Creator is interacting with me on some level through creatures with which I gambol.”

What an affirmation of God’s love for creation, a witness that has the potential to reach all the Earth’s people. God loves us so much, and we can enjoy endless miracles in nature every day. Let us always give witness of our gratitude for divine presence in our lives and in the world.

Prayer for Peace:

O Great Spirit, whose voice I hear in the wind, whose breath gives life to the world, hear me. I come to you as one of your many children. I am small and weak. I need your strength and your wisdom. May I walk in beauty and peace…  Chief Dan George

Spiritual Practice for the Week: Scripture as Continuing Revelation

Read and pray with the Doctrine and Covenants as continuing revelation of God’s vision for the church and creation. Choose a favorite section or focus on recent counsel in Sections 156–164. Pray for deep understanding of meaning. Pray for opening of your heart and emotions to the text. Prayerfully ask to hear the particular phrase or word that speaks to you.

Listen as fully and openly as you can. What sense of divine presence or invitation comes? What is revealed?

Peace Covenant:

Creator God, I will walk in the cold with gratitude for the warmth of your spring to come.
