Right Out of the Font—Inviting People to Christ

2-16By Greg Savage of Lee’s Summit, Missouri, USA

Open your hearts and feel the yearnings of your brothers and sisters who are lonely, despised, fearful, neglected, unloved. Reach out in understanding, clasp their hands, and invite all to share in the blessings of community created in the name of the One who suffered on behalf of all.

—Doctrine and Covenants 161:3a

The mission of the church is to proclaim Jesus Christ and promote communities of joy, hope, love, and peace. When I heard church President Stephen M. Veazey outline the Mission Initiatives that will help members and friends give according to their passions, I sensed the Spirit gently guiding Community of Christ into new opportunities.

From the Chattanooga Congregation in Tennessee we heard of a 10-year-old boy who loved the companionship at church. It was the safest place in his neighborhood. The congregation’s members treated him with respect and loved him for who he was with all his humanness. He was challenged to consider his potential. He sensed God’s call in his young life to become a disciple of Jesus, and he asked for baptism.

He looked forward with great expectation to the event. On the blessed day, he couldn’t contain his joy. The moment he rose from the water, he climbed from the baptismal font and ran from the church, dripping wet.

He ran down the street toward his house, but he didn’t go in. Instead, he went next door to his friend’s house and pounded on the door until the friend came out. Then they went to another house and did the same. He led all the friends back to the church so they could experience the same joy of hope.

This child was willing to invite his friends to share in the Blessings of Community. Thank you for your generous response, which enables the witness of the community.

Prayer for Peace
In the name of the One who suffered for all, God, we ask your forgiveness for times we did not invite people to Christ. Grant us further opportunities to share his peace.

Spiritual Practice: Invite People to Christ
Read and reflect on Doctrine and Covenants 162:3b and 163:2b. Pray to be aware of people who might be receptive, and therefore blessed, by your sharing the message of the Living Christ. Imagine being in relationship with them and inviting them to Christ. In preparation, discover your personal testimony of Christ. “Be persistent in your witness and diligent in your mission to the world.” Repeat this mantra throughout the day: Christ’s mission, our mission, my mission.

Peace Covenant
Today, God, I will extend the invitation that matters most.
