I See!

2-18By Donna Boyd of Independence, Missouri, USA

There are subtle, yet powerful, influences in the world, some even claiming to represent Christ, that seek to divide people and nations to accomplish their destructive aims. That which seeks to harden one human heart against another by constructing walls of fear and prejudice is not of God. Be especially alert to these influences, lest they divide you to divert you from the mission to which you are called.

—Doctrine and Covenants 163:3c

“It’s not that I dislike her,” I said to a dear friend, “but her personality irritates me. She has a talent for coming at the wrong times and staying too long. I want to love her, but she is harder to love than some others.”

My friend’s eyes twinkled as if she would like to laugh, but then she turned a sympathetic ear. “Most of us face this problem as we grow in love for God and earnestly desire a positive affection for all our companions and colleagues,” she explained.

“The first step, of course, is to see that no negative feelings remain for anyone. This should evolve with repentance. Obviously we cannot love everyone as long as we dislike anyone. When we seek a closer communion with the Divine, we feel a growing love for all God’s people.”

“I see! Love for God carries all of our personal relationships to a deeper level. Also, as we learn to love others, we draw closer to God.”

Prayer for Peace
Gather us in your arms, God. Bring us together, leaving our negative selves behind. Help us tear down our dividing walls of fear and prejudice as we share the peace of Christ.

Spiritual Practice: Honoring the Worth of All Persons
Read Psalm 139:13–18. After each reading sit quietly and let the words sink deeply into your mind, heart, and body. Imagine God watching you grow in your mother’s womb. What thoughts and feelings do you have about being “fearfully and wonderfully made” (Psalm 139:14)?

Sense the intimate knowledge God has of you and every child. Be aware of the sacred worth of each person. Weep with God over the soul-wounding forces and events that rob people of dignity and worth. How are you invited to notice, protect, heal, and affirm the spiritual identity of all God’s beloved people today? Pray for God’s compassion.

Peace Covenant
Today, God, I will not let negative influences sway me but will seek your peace.
