Spread the WORD

3-8By Donna Boyd of Independence, Missouri, USA

Praise the Lord, all you nations! Extol him, all you peoples! For great is his steadfast love toward us, and the faithfulness of the Lord endures forever. Praise the Lord!

—Psalm 117

There are many accounts of people in the community who feel their prayers have been unanswered. Feasting on the word of God, however, we have examples of prayers of faith and can add them to our collective memory for strength on the path.

When our daughter, Viki, was an infant, she was very ill. It was a snowy night, and we decided to take her some 40 miles to prayer service with our congregation. When the elder (who lived 40 more miles up the mountain) called to say he was not coming because the Highway Patrol advised people to stay off the road, the host told him we had come for the sacrament of laying on of hands for the sick for Viki.

He then said he would come, but we told him not to. We firmly believed prayers from the safety of his home would be as effective.

Before we left for home, her fever was gone, and she was playing happily. Would I have had that faith without knowing the Bible account of the Centurion’s servant and other stories of answered prayers?

Part of our mission is to invite people to Christ. We can do this by sharing stories from the life of Jesus. The wonderful stories of God’s interaction with humans are ours to share. We share the words of the scriptures, we share our personal experiences, and thus we share the peace of Jesus of Christ. Try to share with someone today a prayer to help strengthen faith.

Prayer for Peace
Attentive God, we know you hear our prayers and weep with us. What encouragement we have knowing you rejoice with us, as well. Help us remember our experiences with you that give us faith and strength for the journey.

Spiritual Practice: Intercessory Reflection
Sit quietly with your eyes closed as you enter intercessory reflection and prayer. Ask God to bring persons to your mind and heart who need prayer. Be open to images of the persons or spiritual insight into their needs. Listen for signals from their lives and let the depth of God’s love for them become powerful and real to you. Write, speak, or think a prayer of blessing and healing for these much-loved disciples and friends. Ask God to help you see ways to affirm and support them when you meet them in daily life.

Peace Covenant
Today, God, I will strengthen my faith with prayer.
