Practice and Prayer

Thursday, March 14

3-14By Julie Conway-Sword of Gainesville, Florida, USA

…let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.

—Matthew 5:16

In her light-blue, chiffon formal, with her violin tucked under her arm, Mom joyfully hurried out the door to play for a church friend’s wedding. Earlier that day, Mom had diligently practiced her music and prayed for the Lord’s presence.

As a parent of three active little girls, Mom often found her preparation time limited. She generously shared her musical talents at church services, weddings, and community events. I felt that whenever Mom played, the Spirit blessed her musical offerings; “ye receive the Spirit through prayer” (Doctrine and Covenants 63:16a).

So what did I learn from my mother’s example? I learned that it’s not only important to prepare to one’s highest degree of musical proficiency, but to dedicate one’s gifts to God’s honor and glory.

When I was a Graceland University freshman I was invited to perform for the entire student body at the convocation. I practiced the piano, and I prayed. I felt a power not my own move my fingers easily over the keys. Later that day my experience led me to write:

“I walked with God today—
He sat beside me on the bench
and helped my fingers play.
I know—I know that somehow from above,
the music flowed through my full heart
expressing His great love.”

Prayer for Peace
The glory is yours, heavenly Parent. Whatever we do to bless the world, we do in your Name. In your Name we share the peace of Christ.

Spiritual Practice: Examining God’s Call to Me and to All
Reflect on God’s call in your life. Begin by prayerfully asking to recall particular moments when you have experienced God’s presence and invitation. Write in your journal or quietly reflect on images and insights that come.

When has God seemed most real in your life? How and when has God called you to use your energies and gifts? When have you felt most deeply connected and responsive to God’s movement in your life? When have you felt disconnected or resistant to God’s call? How do your gifts and callings connect with the call of God that you notice in your family, friends, congregation, or community?

Peace Covenant
The light I emanate today, God, will be to your glory.
