Spirit of Community

However, timely resolution of pressing issues in various nations is necessary for the restoring work of the gospel to move forward with all of its potential. Therefore, let the proper World Church officers act in their callings—as already provided in church law—to create and interpret church policies to meet the needs of the church in different nations in harmony with the principles contained in this counsel.

Where possible and appropriate, convene national or field conferences to provide opportunities for broader dialogue, understanding, and consent. In those gatherings, let the spirit of love, justice, and truth prevail.

—Doctrine and Covenants 164:7c–d

My mission center had a session to prepare for a national conference. I was not sure what to expect, other than many people defending their ideas of what they thought was right. I was dreading what was about to take place.

God met me in my fear, and a spirit of community prevailed. Instead of heated debate, we shared stories. Instead of monopolizing the markets of rightness, people found a shared expression of vulnerability. Instead of crossed arms and eye rolling, there were open ears and open hearts. It was a session of difficult topics, more difficult questions, and the challenge of finding God’s path for us. It was not what I expected, but it was what I needed.

We are not called to take the easy path. We sometimes are called to take the road less traveled. I am thankful God is with us on this journey.

Prayer for Peace

Just and gentle God, be with us on our journey of discernment. May your Spirit in us rise above opinions. May your love infuse all discussions. May Christ’s peace be shared in all gatherings.

Spiritual Practice: Encountering Scripture as Continuing Revelation

Read and pray with Doctrine and Covenants as Continuing Revelation of God’s vision for the church and creation. Choose a favorite section or focus on counsel in Sections 156—164. Read a few selected paragraphs slowly three or four times. Pause to pray for deep understanding after each reading.

Pray for the opening of your heart and emotions. Prayerfully ask to hear the phrase or word that speaks to you or touches your life. Stay with this word or phrase. Listen as fully and openly as you can. What sense of divine presence or invitation comes? What is revealed?

Peace Covenant

Today, God, I will listen more than I speak.
