All the Way to Brooklyn

Thursday, March 21

???????????????????????????????????????By Jim Holloway of Murfreesboro, Tennessee, USA

Are any among you sick? They should call for the elders of the church and have them pray over them, anointing them with oil in the name of the Lord.

—James 5:14

It started as a simple request from a prayer partner in Ohio. She asked me and the other prayer circle members to pray for her friend, Brenda, who at age 40 had become pregnant. Brenda had lost a child a few years before in the first trimester. There were again the same possible dangers, and Brenda was asking for all the prayers she could recruit.

Several weeks later another e-mail asked the prayer partners to lift Brenda and the baby in prayer to our Lord even more. Because these prayer friends are not members of Community of Christ, I wondered how to approach them about the possibility of Brenda receiving the sacrament of laying on of hands for the sick. I asked her to get out her Bible and read James 5:14. I told her our church believed strongly in this scripture. If Brenda and her husband were willing, I would arrange a visit with the pastor of a local congregation.

The pastor arranged for two ministers from the congregation to visit Brenda and her husband, to pray for and anoint her with consecrated oil. During the next several weeks there were more prayer requests and even some moments when we wondered if the baby would survive. Brenda had faithfully placed her deep concerns in God’s hands by asking many in the community to pray for her family.

At twenty-eight weeks Brooklyn was born. She weighed less than three pounds and was 14 inches long. The doctors and nurses were pleasantly surprised at how she thrived. Except for the fact that Brooklyn was born several weeks early, there were no major complications! We gave glory to God for what we felt was answered prayer. You just have to wonder if by some miracle, that small drop of oil placed on Brenda’s head made it all the way to Brooklyn.

Prayer for Peace
Healing God, may we extend our faith outside our community so others may be blessed. May we search far and wide for ways to share Christ’s peace.

Spiritual Practice: Offering Blessings of Community
Receive and share Blessings of Community. Begin with a prayer of gratitude for the relationships in your life. See and feel connections with family members, spiritual friends, people in your congregation and community, and people and creatures in God’s sacred web of life. What blessings flow to you from these circles?

Reflect, pray, or write in your journal about the call to be “Community of Christ.” Go deeper each day as you discern what act of blessing you are invited to complete.

Peace Covenant
Today, God, I will hold those in need up to your healing light.
