Beyond the Clouds

Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed the. When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted. And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

—Matthew 28:16–20

Two companions and I planned to attend World Conference in 1950. It was a long way from Ontario, Canada, so we decided to fly. It was our first time in an airplane, and we were a little apprehensive.

On the day of the flight the sky was overcast, and it was bitter cold. When we got to the airport, ominous clouds covered the sky. It looked as if we could soon be in the middle of a snowstorm…and then we were! We boarded the plane, settled in our seats, and waited nervously. The weather couldn’t be much worse.

After a long time, the pilot announced we were about to take off. We soared through the clouds, and to our amazement, the plane burst through into a blue sky! The clouds were a billowy blanket below us, and the sun was shining.

If we allow ourselves to be enveloped by God’s Spirit, we will find that beyond the “dark and cloudy” days we experience from time to time, there is a brighter day waiting. God will guide us through discouragement and loneliness and will place in our path someone who is sensitive to our needs. Someone who will bring us the love and support Jesus showed will be there to lift us above the dark clouds. Each day, may we look hopefully to the promise that God is with us always.

Prayer for Peace
Creator God, lift us to where we can feel the warmth of your light. We know you are there, but sometimes we can’t see you. To the end of the age, may we share the peace of Jesus Christ.

Spiritual Practice: Light
Close your eyes, and become centered with your breath. Reflect on the statement: “The light of God is in all things,” as you breathe gently in and out. Sense or see a point of light in the distance, coming gradually toward you. With each breath it comes closer, growing in size and brightness. The light has a bright, soft beauty and radiates loving peace. The light of God reaches you and permeates you with a deep sense of peace. Rest in the light as it surrounds and fills you. Thank God that you live in God’s light, and it lives in you.

Peace Covenant
Today, God, I will not doubt you are with me.

I just read your story and wonder if you took any photos of the rostrum at that Conference.
My husbands family were the only international people at that Conference and they were sat in the choir loft behind the rostrum all week. He has tried to find a photo taken at that Conference. We would love to hear from you. Vera Entwistle
