A Spiritual Fit

But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without a trace of partiality or hypocrisy.

—James 3:17

I worked in a small branch library where I was the only employee. A card catalog file and table were delivered in two pieces. The table had no top, but had ridges to fit the card file. I tried several ways to put them together with no success. Finally, I decided the wrong table had been sent; so I set the file on another table.

When a librarian came from the county, she was surprised to see the file on a different table. She told me the two pieces had been together in another library and were sent directly to me. So I decided to try again. With my husband’s help, I finally fit them together.

I find spiritual concerns to be similar. People read promises in the scriptures and want to claim the blessings that are theirs. They want everything magically to fit together. The results often disappoint when they do not understand the connection between doing the work of the kingdom and receiving the fruits.

Sometimes our testimonies can renew the faith of those around us. As we Invite People to Christ, together we can share the fruits.

Prayer for Peace
God of wisdom, without partiality we will follow your guidance. Being vulnerable to your grace, we will extend mercy to one another. Being willing to yield, we will share of the fruits of the spirit. We will share Christ’s peace.

Spiritual Practice: Teacher-learner
The first disciples of Jesus followed to hear his words, to be taught, to learn a new way of living, to practice what they learned in daily life. Prayerfully consider your role as a teacher-learner, disciple-apprentice; a people cultivator in Community of Christ. In your journal write the names of several persons you discern as teachers or mentors and several you feel called to nurture and encourage in specific ways. Ask God’s blessing on you and your congregation as a community of learners.

Peace Covenant
Today, God, I will gently invite people to Christ.
