The Gifts of the “Other”

Saturday, July 13

7-13By Donna Boyd of Independence, Missouri, USA

May the God of steadfastness and encouragement grant you to live in harmony with one another, in accordance with Christ Jesus, so that together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

—Romans 15:5–6

God’s gifts are all around us. Some we recognize the first time we see them, others we grow into recognition. Some are complete for us to enjoy and share with others. Some are in the form of tools and talent with which we build and create.

What we do with them, how we share them is our gift to God. Communication is one way we share. Listening is more than half of that gift. Take a moment to think of one of God’s gifts to you. Plan how to share it today.

Reflect on someone with whom you share your life. How can you help that person see and foster God-given giftedness? Sincere compliments open our eyes to gifts we may not have seen. When you compliment someone, you also are praising God, who created the person. We can be generous as God is generous with us. When you feel led to share Blessings of Community, tell someone “Goodonya, mate.”

Prayer for Peace
Steadfast Creator, we praise you for gifts and talents we have received. We give thanks for the encouragement we receive to develop and share these gifts. May we employ them in sharing Christ’s peace.

Spiritual Practice: Offering Blessings of Community
Receive and share Blessings of Community. Begin with a prayer of gratitude for the relationships in your life. See and feel connections with family members, spiritual friends, people in your congregation and community, and people and creatures in God’s sacred web of life. What blessings flow to you from these circles? How have you felt the love of the community?

Reflect, pray, or write in your journal about the call to be “Community of Christ.” Go deeper each day as you discern what act of blessing you are invited to complete.

Peace Covenant
Today, God, I will be aware of the gifts of others and share with them what a blessing they are.
