In the Image of Christ

Thursday, July 18

7-18By Dorene Kilburn of Stratford, Ontario, Canada

As revealed in Christ, God, the Creator of all, ultimately is concerned about behaviors and relationships that uphold the worth and giftedness of all people and that protect the most vulnerable…It requires whole-life stewardship dedicated to expanding the church’s restoring ministries, especially those devoted to asserting the worth of persons…

—Doctrine and Covenants 164:6a, 9c

Moments when we gain new insight about who and whose we are often happen when we least expect them. They happen when we are not even looking for them.

My husband and I recently attended a funeral in an Anglican church. We have been to that church several times. The beautiful stained-glass windows speak to my soul. But I was not deeply moved by the liturgy until I noticed a thought in the readings that jumped at me: “May you see the face of Jesus in everyone you meet, and may everyone you meet see the face of Jesus in you.”

It occurred to me that those few words encapsulated what is required of a disciple of Jesus Christ. To see the face of Jesus in everyone we meet means we must see with Jesus’ eyes. He saw the worth and potential of each person. Often, not-so-lovable exteriors masked those souls, and lives changed because of Christ’s unconditional love.

It is sometimes hard for us to see with Jesus’ eyes. It’s hard put aside our own biases and see that spark of divinity that’s there, even in those with whom we may not feel comfortable. It is a humbling challenge for us to live so other people can see the face of Jesus in us. With the help of Jesus—our friend, mentor, and perfect example of goodness and mercy—we can be what he calls us to be, his presence in our world today.

Prayer for Peace
God of the diverse creation, help us see Christ in everyone we meet. May our behavior make us worthy reflections of Christ. May we share your shalom as embodied in Christ’s peace.

Spiritual Practice: Honoring the Worth of All Persons
Sense the intimate knowledge God has of you and every child. Be aware of the sacred worth of each person. Weep with God over the soul-wounding forces and events that rob people of dignity and worth. How are you invited to notice, protect, heal, and affirm the spiritual identity of all God’s beloved people today? Pray for God’s compassion.

Peace Covenant
Today, God, I will devote myself to asserting the Worth of All Persons.
