There’s a Rock in My Shoe…Where’s God?

Tuesday, August 20

8-20By Louita Clothier of Lamoni, Iowa, USA

Learn of me, and listen to my words; walk in the meekness of my Spirit and you shall have peace in me.

—Doctrine and Covenants 18:2n

It was a beautiful summer day in the countryside. A mix of forests and pastures covered the hills, typical of southern Iowa. The grasshoppers had not yet taken over the fields. The big, round hay bales made interesting patterns on the landscape. Yet as I walked along, I saw only ordinary trees, ordinary fields. I probably didn’t even notice the birds singing. I did notice a pain in my knee and a rock in my shoe.

Fast forward two or three days, walking down that same road. Somehow my spirit had awakened, and this time God surrounded me with loving presence. I looked at the wide sky stretching over me from horizon to horizon and peeked through several layers of clouds to the deep blue beyond. I felt like I saw into all eternity.

Every leaf on every tree, and every bird that sang, even every spinning spider was a manifestation that God’s love is in all and through all creation. Everything seemed such a miracle, and my heart was full. I wanted to skip!

My thoughts turned to prayer, and I found myself a mile down the road, not remembering how I got there. What was the difference between these two days? Why was I able to see—see and experience that second day? Wasn’t God there the first day?

Of course, God’s Spirit was there both days. It’s just that I wasn’t ready. I wasn’t aware. God was there, but I was “out to lunch.” When we prepare ourselves for the presence of God, we receive a deep awareness of the beauty, blessings, and miracles present all day, every day.

Prayer for Peace
Eternal Presence, eternal Creator, thank you for what we experience from horizon to horizon—evidence of your loving presence. As we become aware of your gift of inner peace, may we share it with others.

Spiritual Practice: Caring for God’s Sacred Creation
Choose a way to notice, give thanks, and care for God’s sacred creation. Prayerfully consider one of the following practices or create your own. Walk in nature with a spirit of gratitude while looking and listening for God in all things. Write or pray a psalm of praise for the Earth’s beauty or a prayer of healing and blessing for its wounds.

Learn about and engage in an act of Earth-keeping such as recycling, simple living, or fasting from over-consumption of resources. Notice the diversity of the planet’s creatures and be gentle to plants, animals, trees, and people! Fall in love with the vast, intricate wonder of God’s creation and give thanks.

Peace Covenant
Today, God, I will walk with an awareness of creation—an awareness of you.

Good morning, Louita, reading your Daily Bread story today woke up my awareness. As I read I took time to stop and look out of the window at beautiful majestic fir trees on our lawn and thanked God for life and friends. Have a great day, my friend!
