Temple Encounter

Friday, September 6

9-6By Karen Moreland of Independence, Missouri, USA

Become a people of the Temple…who encounter broken spirits and find pathways for healing…Open your hearts and feel the yearnings of your brothers and sisters who are lonely, despised, fearful, neglected, unloved…invite all to share in the blessings…

—Doctrine and Covenants 161:2a, 3a

Working as a receptionist at the Temple in Independence, Missouri, has been a joyful experience. People representing various life experiences come to the Temple. I never know the burdens that some carry in their hearts when they walk in and ask to see the Sanctuary.

Three young adults walked down the grand staircase and up to the reception counter. “What kind of crazy-looking building is this?” one asked. I explained it was the Community of Christ Temple, dedicated to the pursuit of peace. It is a sanctuary. When one asked, “Can we climb to the top?” I explained they could walk up the Worshiper’s Path to the Sanctuary—a sacred space.

Two of the young adults kept apologizing for their friend, who kept asking questions, “You will let us see inside the spiral-shaped building?” “Yes,” I replied, as I handed them the brochure with the map. Surprised, he said, “Even me?” “Yes, even you. All are welcome to come and experience the presence of God.”

All three walked up the Worshiper’s Path.

The Daily Prayer for Peace had just ended, and Cathy from Visitor Services met them in the Sanctuary. The building impressed all three, but so did the hospitality they received. They respected the sacred space and wanted to know more about Community of Christ. They said they had never experienced such loving peace and welcome.

They asked if they could come back in a couple of days. On their next visit they spent much time and asked many questions. They accepted information about Community of Christ. They accepted the invitation.

Prayer for Peace
God of hospitality, help us welcome strangers and invite them to return. Help us open our hearts and love them unconditionally. May we share Christ’s peace with strangers and friends.

Spiritual Practice: Invite People to Christ
Read and reflect on Doctrine and Covenants 162:3b and 163:2b. Pray to be aware of people who might be receptive, and therefore blessed, by your sharing of the message of the Living Christ. Imagine being in relationship with them and inviting them to Christ. In preparation, discover your personal testimony of Christ. “Be persistent in your witness and diligent in your mission to the world.” Repeat this mantra throughout the day: “Christ’s mission, our mission, my mission.”

Peace Covenant
Today, God, I will open my mind, my heart, answer questions, and invite.
