I Will Lift Up Mine Eyes

I lift up my eyes to the hills—from where will my help come? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth. He will not let your foot be moved; he who keeps you will not slumber. He who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. The Lord is your keeper; the Lord is your shade at your right hand.

—Psalm 121:1–5

This scripture passage became real to me as a young man. I had walked to the grocery store two blocks from our home one Saturday morning to get a gallon of milk. I had a problem—a terrible headache. Walking home, I looked at the ground in front of me, downcast, with my total attention taken by my pounding headache.

I was about a half block from home when I heard a still, small voice within me say, “Look up.” I looked up to the sky. I focused on the horizon. I saw one of the most beautiful sights I had ever seen. The sunlight was bursting through the clouds, creating a brilliant scene shining from the panoramic view.

I immediately began praising and thanking God for what I beheld as a blessing. I thanked God for all of creation. With my eyes no longer fixed on the ground, and my step lighter, I reflected my joy the rest of the way home. When I arrived a few minutes later, to my surprise, my headache was gone.

Where we focus our attention makes a difference. God blesses us when we attend to things that matter. God enlightens us and helps us make Christ’s mission our mission.

Prayer for Peace
Creator of Sunrises, we lift our eyes to your creation. You lift our spirits and reward us with what we find there. You bless us to continue our journey. May we choose to journey where we can share peace with companion travelers and with those beyond the horizon.

Spiritual Practice: Time with God
Sit quietly and let your breathing become calm and deep. Ask God’s Spirit to rest on you. See or sense the Spirit anointing you in the form of light, a dove, wind, color, or other images that might come. Ask to be made aware of God’s love. Listen to the ways in which God wants to flow from your heart as living water. Give thanks that your name is “beloved,” that our name is Community of Christ.

Peace Covenant
Today, God, I choose to seek what matters most.
