“Supper and a Sunset”

The mission of Jesus Christ is what matters most for the journey ahead.

—Doctrine and Covenants 164:9f

Winter in Florida can be comfortably warm or a little chilly. On my last visit with my family there, the weather turned from beautifully warm to beautifully nippy! For many years, I have made it my goal to drive the ten minutes to the beach for a few minutes at least every other day. If I don’t set that goal, then I wish I had nourished myself with the beauty of the beach more often. I like to time it so I can see the sunsets.

One day we decided to have a chili-to-go picnic on the beach. Better than “dinner and a movie” was “supper and a sunset.” We bundled up in coats and hats. We wrapped Mom’s steamy pot of chili in newspaper to keep it warm. As we filled our plates, the sun set—right on time. It was a feast for the soul. Vibrant colors spread across the clouds near the horizon, lasting well beyond the visual drop of the sun. The blues in the sky turned darker until stars appeared. The canopy of an Australian pine tree framed our moment.

We wondered if many others would head to the beach in such cool weather for a picnic. Yet by choosing to do so, a devotional experience enveloped us as we sat in the crisp, cool air surrounded by God’s glorious wonders.

Though often unnoticed, moments like these renew my devotion. When I take time to admire all that is good and pure around me.

May we devote ourselves to Jesus’ call to live life anew, to love deeply, to be kind, to bear each other’s burdens, to forgive, to affirm one another—to engage in Christ’s mission is what matters most.

Prayer for Peace
Revealing God, we see you in sunsets and in one another. May we clearly see Christ’s mission so it may become our mission.

Spiritual Practice: Sacredness of Creation
Choose a way to notice, give thanks, and care for God’s sacred creation. Prayerfully consider one of the following practices or create your own. Walk in nature with a spirit of gratitude while looking and listening for God in all things. Write or pray a psalm of praise for the Earth’s beauty or a prayer of healing and blessing for its wounds.

Learn about and engage in an act of Earth-keeping such as recycling, simple living, or fasting from over-consumption of resources. Notice the diversity of the planet’s creatures and be gentle to plants, animals, trees, and people! Fall in love with the vast, intricate wonder of God’s creation and give thanks.

Peace Covenant
Today, God, I will choose watching your sunset over watching a movie.

    Becky:
Sunrises can be special gifts from God, too. Thanks for sharing your special sunset.
