As a spiritual venture, boldly follow the initiatives into the heart of God’s vision for the church and creation. Then, in response to growing insight about God’s nature and will, continue to shape communities that live Christ’s love and mission. Lovingly invite others to experience the good news of new life in community with Christ. Opportunities abound in your daily lives if you choose to see them. Undertake compassionate and just actions that seek to abolish poverty and end needless suffering. Pursue peace on and for the Earth. Let nothing separate you from this mission.

—Words of Counsel, 2013 World Conference

Over the years I have had the privilege of working in different roles during World Conference. Several years ago I was a lectern monitor for two conferences. In 2007 I began working for international headquarters for the Presiding Bishopric, a week prior to world conference.  In 2010 I took photos at world conference for the Herald team. I asked delegates, “When did you feel the Spirit move?” This last conference of 2013 I was a delegate caucus secretary.

With each of these opportunities I felt the sense of great joy we have in coming together as a community. The love that is shared as we join together from all over the world is one of the most awesome things I’ve been a part of. There have been sensitive issues discerned and discussed, yet there is still great respect and love for all. There was opportunity for all positions to be heard.

With each of these opportunities I’ve also been blessed to reconnect with old friends and make new ones. Reconnecting with friends from where I grew up in Michigan, with friends from my year at Graceland, and with friends from reunions and retreats.

At the 2013 conference I also had the joy of watching my two teenage daughters, Jessica and Danielle as delegates. They fully embraced their responsibility with eagerness and enthusiasm. They, too, reconnected with friends and made many new ones.

When I reflect on the spirit of world conferences I’m thankful to be part of a community, a family, a circle of friends, all striving for the Kingdom of God.

Prayer for Peace
God of Wisdom, you have told us, where two or three are gathered in your name—you are among us. We also know where two or three thousand are gathered to confer in your name—you are there. Together we legislate and lives are changed. We pursue consensus in peace.

Spiritual Practice: Encountering Scripture as Continuing Revelation
Read and pray with Doctrine and Covenants as Continuing Revelation of God’s vision for the church and creation. Choose a favorite section or focus on counsel in Sections 156–164. Read a few selected paragraphs slowly three or four times. Pause to pray for deep understanding after each reading.

Peace Covenant
Today, God, I will pray for the leadership of the church.

I also pray for the leadership, as I believe they have led us down the wrong road. The ‘mission of Christ’ is the salvation of our souls! Not filling our bellies!
