…give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap; for the measure you give will be the measure you get back.”

—Luke 6:38

We were getting ready to go to church one Sunday morning. One of our tasks as a family is to prepare our offering envelopes. Our 11-year-old son, Ben, who recently had received some birthday money, happily said he wanted to give it all to the church. It wasn’t much, but to him eight dollars was a lot—and it was all he had.

Trying to be a thoughtful steward, I explained to Ben that tithing means 10 percent, which would be 80 cents. His response was, “I don’t care, I want to give it all.” And so he did.

What a great lesson of generosity this was for all of us. He gave without expectation of reward, setting an example of giving to one’s true capacity.

My beloved child, I have often considered what I might pass on to you.
What value is fragmented thought and unfinished work?
I must not burden you with my yearning and half-hearted dreams.
Perhaps it is better that I take these things with me and permit you
To create something better to share with those who come after you.

—Peggy Michael

Prayer for Peace
Generous God, inspire us to give as a child gives—with a loving heart. May we learn from children pure motives for generosity and take joy in giving and sharing Christ’s peace.

Spiritual Practice: Listening to Children
Sit in your quiet place and center your heart and mind on God’s presence. Spend several minutes asking God to bring into your awareness the names and images of children in your life. You may see their faces or hear their voices as you receive these impressions.

Listen deeply to the unique gifts and needs of the children who come to mind. Offer a prayer of blessing for each child and the needs you perceive. If you feel led, you also may want to write a note or card and give a message of affirmation and love to each child.

Peace Covenant
Today, God, I will bypass conventional wisdom and give with a generous spirit.

And a little child shall lead us. Oh to be so generous!
