No, Never Alone

5-21By Harry Dennis of Boise, Idaho, USA

Rejoice in the Lord, O you righteous. Praise befits the upright. Praise the Lord with the lyre; make melody to him with the harp of ten strings. Sing to him a new song; play skillfully on the strings, with loud shouts. For the word of the Lord is upright, and all his work is done in faithfulness. He loves righteousness and justice; the earth is full of the steadfast love of the Lord.

—Psalm 33:1–5 NRSV

Most of us experience high points and low points in our lives. The mountaintop experiences often happen at camps and reunions, or perhaps in study and worship. Music can bring tears of joy to our eyes. Yet, it seems we must always return to the valleys, where routine and possible crises exist.

We hope we store enough strength and awareness when we’re at the peaks of our spirituality to carry us through the down times of life. Wherever we are on life’s journey, God assures us of divine presence. This enables us not only to survive but to become whole.

The Earth is full of the steadfast love of the Lord. We are never alone—no, never alone!

Prayer for Peace Great is your faithfulness, God. We know you are with us in times of joy, and we gather strength from your love. The strength of your love carries us through times of sorrow. We praise you for the peace of Christ, given to us to share.

Spiritual Practice: Music for Meditation Identify a form of music for meditation. If hearing music is not an alternative, choose a song you can sing or play on a musical instrument. Choose music that carries a soulful, spiritual, or healing quality for you. Sit quietly and soak in the melody and resonance. Allow healing sound to pierce body, spirit, and emotions. What do you feel or see as you listen? Does the music have colors? What spiritual message comes? How are you being restored, nurtured, healed, or moved to compassionate response?

Peace Covenant Today, God, I will gather strength as I listen for you, and then I will share it with someone in need.
