“So Glad You Called…”

Monday, June 16

6-16By Peggy Michael of Cantonment, Florida, USA

The Lord make his face to shine upon you, and be gracious to you; the Lord lift up his countenance upon you, and give you peace.

—Numbers 6:25–26 NRSV

Shortly after sunrise the phone rang. The early hour of the call made me a little anxious. Moments later a delightful voice set me at ease. Instead of speaking, my friend burst into joyful song, “Oh, what a beautiful morning, oh what a beautiful day!” I joined her for a few lines, and then we laughed in glee, for our talent did not match our feeling.

Bonnia declared, “It is such a bright, sunshiny day, and the birds are singing, so I just had to call you. I hope you don’t mind.” How could I possibly mind such a delightful wake-up call?

Her faith experience is different from mine, but often our hearts beat in unison in the presence of the Holy Spirit. She is a faithful friend to Community of Christ and daily draws closer. Bonnia shares our rich testimony of Christ, and we celebrate many of the same sacraments together.

She has the gift of presence, and she blesses us with her kind manner and her good example of discipleship. This good woman connected with Community of Christ later in life. However, she has been a practicing Christian since childhood. Members of her family strengthen our congregation and have covenanted with Christ among us. I am glad Bonnia called this morning as we celebrated the joy of the Lord together.

Prayer for Peace Universal God, awaken us each morning with your love. Open our eyes to your truth and light. Open us to friendships from unexpected places. Open our hearts to welcome them to our table of peace.

Spiritual Practice: Examining God’s Call to Me and to All Reflect on God’s call in your life. Begin by prayerfully asking to recall particular moments when you have experienced God’s presence and invitation. Write in your journal or quietly reflect on images and insights that come.

When has God seemed most real in your life? How and when has God called you to use your energies and gifts? When have you felt God’s love in your life? When have you felt disconnected or resistant to God’s call? How do your gifts and callings connect with the call of God you notice in your family, friends, congregation, or community?

Peace Covenant Today, God, I will celebrate the joy of the Lord with stranger and friend alike.

  2. The question asked at the end, referring to connecting to God’s call is not worded well and is confusing.
