Blessings Indeed!

Jabez called on the God of Israel, saying, “Oh that you would bless me and enlarge my border, and that your hand might be with me, and that you would keep me from hurt and harm!” And God granted what he asked.

—1 Chronicles 4:10 NRSV

Our richest blessings are to be at one with the Creator and at rest in divine hands. We often ask and even long for blessings for particular reasons. We have elders in the church to perform the sacraments of laying on of hands for the sick and blessing of children. We have evangelists who can offer a blessing for our homes, congregations, and our lives. We may ask for guidance, healing, and confirmation for our role as Christ’s disciples.

Jabez put his trust in God. He knew if God blessed him, it would be in God’s time, where God decided, and how God chose. Jabez asks and then surrenders. Oh that God would bless me indeed!

I read of a man who imagined going to heaven, where there were shelves of boxes. One was for him. Opening it, he found all the blessings God wanted to give him during his life, but the man never asked.

As we pray for our families, friends, healing of the world and its people, forgiveness for our enemies and ourselves, let us remember God longs to bless us. Let us feel free to ask, “Oh that you would bless me indeed!”

Prayer for Peace God of past, present, and future generations, we praise your name for the blessings you offer. We pray we will be a blessing to others as we share the peace of Jesus Christ.

Spiritual Practice: Examining God’s Call to Me and to All Reflect on God’s call in your life. Begin by prayerfully asking to recall particular moments when you have experienced God’s presence and invitation. Write in your journal or quietly reflect on images and insights that come.

When has God seemed most real in your life? How and when has God called you to use your energies and gifts? When have you felt God’s love in your life? When have you felt disconnected or resistant to God’s call? How do your gifts and callings connect with the call of God you notice in your family, friends, congregation, or community?

Peace Covenant Today, God, I will become aware of blessings not yet realized, so I may bless others.
